Baptism
Baptism
is the first sacrament celebrated in the Catholic Church. The symbols are a white robe, water,
oil, baptismal candle and sign of the cross.
·
The parents and
godparents bring forward the baby to be baptized.
·
The priest asks
questions such as “Do you believe in God.”
·
The priest pours
water over the baby 3 times.
·
The priest makes a
sign of the cross with oil.
·
The baptismal candle
is lit as a sign of new life.
Reconciliation
Reconciliation
is when we make peace with God for the things
we have done wrong.
1. Think about what I have done wrong.
2. Be sorry for my sins.
3. Make up my mind not to sin again.
4. Confess my sins to the priest.
5. Do the penance the priest gives me."
Confirmation
Confirmation confirms the promises made during baptism. The dove is a symbol of the Holy
Spirit. The Holy Spirit came to
the apostles during Pentecost and gave them courage to practice their
faith. During
Confirmation, a sponsor lays a hand on the candidate’s shoulder while the
bishop makes a sign of the cross on the forehead using oil. He says, “Be sealed with the gift of
the Holy Spirit.”
Eucharist
Holy
Communion is the most important of all the sacraments. It is celebrated during the mass where
the bread and wine is changed to become the body and blood of Jesus. Just as Jesus celebrated his final meal
with his friends, we come together to celebrate with our community.
